May 20th is World Bee Day every year. It was initiated by the Slovenian Beekeeping Association in April 2015. After the “44th International Beekeeping Conference” held in Daejeon, South Korea from September 15th to 20th, 2015 20th May every year as World Bee Day. The Chinese Society of Beekeeping and Chinese bee products represented China at the meeting, which is a strong promoter of the establishment of “World Bee Day”.
Bees and other pollinators depend on a large part of the crops that humans depend on for food. But bees are under threat. The current rate of species extinction is 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal due to human influence. Nearly 35% of the world’s invertebrate pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, and about 17% of vertebrate pollinators such as bats face extinction.
If this trend continues, nutritious crops such as fruits, nuts and many vegetables will gradually be replaced by staple crops such as rice, corn and potatoes, eventually leading to dietary imbalances.
Intensive farming practices, land-use changes, monocultures, pesticides, and warming associated with climate change are all adversely affecting bee colonies and, ultimately, the quality of food grown.
On May 20, 2022, we are about to usher in the fifth World Bee Day!
