Bee pollen is the pollen collected by worker bees and mixed with nectar, secretions and honey and other substances through anaerobic fermentation.
For hundreds of years, bee pollen has had both food and medicinal roles in some countries (eg Egypt, Greece, China), with antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immune stimulating and wound healing properties.
Although most of the medical value has not been established, due to its rich nutrition (contains 22 kinds of amino acids, 18 kinds of vitamins, 25 kinds of minerals, 59 kinds of trace elements, 11 kinds of enzymes, 14 kinds of fatty acids, 11 kinds of carbohydrates and rich polyphenols), so it is often used as a health food. You can add it to smoothies, toast, yogurt, salads or any of your favorite everyday foods.
How does bee pollen taste?
It’s important to note that tastes are relative – what may be one taste to one person may be another to others. My personal taste for bee pollen is powdery, floral, slightly bitter but sweet.
How do you store bee pollen?
The best place to store bee pollen is a refrigerator or freezer, or a cool, dark place like a pantry. Keep it away from UV radiation (i.e. sunlight), as heat reduces the nutritional value of pollen. If stored properly, it will keep for about three years.
How do you take bee pollen?
First, you must be aware that when taking bee pollen, just like any other bee product, you must exercise caution as it may have effects on people allergic to bee products. Adults can try adding 1/4 teaspoon of bee pollen at a time and can increase their daily intake to two tablespoons per day. Children can also eat bee pollen, and should start with a few grains.
